What is touch?

Score tries without the tackles

Touch is a fun, fast-paced game where players score tries like rugby, but without tackles. The core skills and rules are simple to pick up, and the ball handling, agility and decision-making skills transfer to other sports.

Touch is played all around the world, with international tournaments including the World Cup, the Euros and the Atlantic Youth Touch Cup. England also hosts the Nationals, the University Touch Championships, the Junior Touch Cup and lots of interclub tournaments.

Touch is one of the fastest-growing sports in English schools, and we're training the next generation of players.

Non-contact Fun as a team Growing fast in schools

How it works

  1. Six a sideSix players on the pitch per team, with subs swapping on and off at any time.
  2. Touch, don't tackleDefenders stop the attack by touching the player with the ball.
  3. Six touchesAfter each touch the attack restarts with a rollball. After six touches with no score, the ball goes to the other team.
  4. Score a tryGround the ball on or over the try line. Every try is worth one point.

The pathway

From school PE to England

We're the first step on the England Touch high-performance pathway. A girl who first tries touch for London Tridents has a clear, supported route to playing for England.

The Try Sports Centre of Excellence

The UK's first and only touch rugby Centre of Excellence, designed with England Touch and coached by current and former international Opens players. It develops skills on the pitch and character off it, and links local centres to the England Junior HP Academy.

From our 2026 Tridents team, 14 girls were invited to the Centre of Excellence.
